Katherine rubbed her stomach with a pained expression and mimed being sick, and the audience roared with laughter.

‘I bought some lovely sweeties

And then I wanted more,

I spent all of my money,

And ate ’em by the score.

They give you lots of energy,

Of that there is no doubt —

The only thing about ’em is

They make your teeth fall out!’

Katherine grinned hugely at the audience, who recoiled — and well they might, for Ellen and I had covered every other front tooth with black court-plaster. ‘Let my dreadful plight be a warning to you!’ she called, and twirled off stage to my side of the wings.

The audience were applauding and stamping their feet. ‘Sing it again!’ someone shouted. ‘Never a truer word!’ The stamping increased.

Katherine raised her eyebrows at me, and I nodded. She stuck her head out of the wings. ‘Again? You want me to tell you this tale of woe and suffering again?’

‘YES!’ bellowed the audience.

Mr Templeton’s grin nearly split his head in two. ‘You heard ’em, Felicity,’ he roared. ‘Get yourself out here!’

Katherine put on an exasperated face. ‘Oh very well,’ she said, and danced into the lights.
